Summary

For fifty years, the medical establishment has preached the same rules for losing weight: restrict calories, eat less, and exercise more。 Yet in that time, obesity in the United States has skyrocketed。 So why has this prescription so clearly failed?

Based on twenty years of investigative reporting and interviews with more than a hundred practicing physicians who embrace ketogenic (low-carbohydrate, high-fat) eating as the best formula for health, here bestselling author Gary Taubes puts the keto movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective。 He makes clear the vital misconceptions about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply by eating too much or being sedentary; hormones play the critical role) and uses collected clinical experience from the medical community to provide much-needed practical advice on healthy eating。

A groundbreaking manifesto for the fight against obesity and diabetes, in The Case for Keto, Taubes reveals why the established rules about eating healthfully might be the wrong approach to weight loss for most people, and how ketogenic diets can help many of us achieve and maintain a healthy weight for life。

After being introduced to Max Lugavere last year, I have gone on a mission to study more about food and diet。 This book was one of the most informative books I’ve read about diet and specifically low carb/ketogenic diets。 If you are interested in the human body, curious about keto and interested in how you body might be functioning。 I recommend you read this book。

The title is deceptive。 Book titles are decided by publishers, not the authors。 It's marketing decision。 While Taubes does do the Keto himself, this book explains why some people do better with therapeutic carbohydrate restriction。 In the past 50 years, the advice for fat loss has been completely focused on the calories in/calories out model, commonly referred to as CICO。CICO does work, but what Taubes shows here is that CICO is only one lever when it comes to fat loss and weight management。 Mor The title is deceptive。 Book titles are decided by publishers, not the authors。 It's marketing decision。 While Taubes does do the Keto himself, this book explains why some people do better with therapeutic carbohydrate restriction。 In the past 50 years, the advice for fat loss has been completely focused on the calories in/calories out model, commonly referred to as CICO。CICO does work, but what Taubes shows here is that CICO is only one lever when it comes to fat loss and weight management。 Moreover, this book should give folks more empathy for those in larger bodies。 Those that do accumulate fat more easily do seem to have a genetic disposition, or epigenetic one。 Everyone has seen families of predominantly larger bodied folks and the opposite。 Conversely, we've known slim bodied friends that can eat whatever and stay slim。 Genes do matter here。 Here Taubes argues that insulin plays a role。 Elevated insulin prevents the body from accessing body fat as energy。 It also promotes hunger。 Keto works to alleviate this for many people。 。。。more

Maybe I have a bias against Keto as I think it causes Cholesterol issues but none the less, I was willing to give this book a try as I wanted to get into more healthy eating。 I think the concepts are fine on a surface level, the science is a bit confusing (it's who you listen to) and the recipe ideas weren't appetising for me。 However, I give it a 4 star because I think anyone looking to get into healthy eating should do whatever they are comfortable with。 Maybe I have a bias against Keto as I think it causes Cholesterol issues but none the less, I was willing to give this book a try as I wanted to get into more healthy eating。 I think the concepts are fine on a surface level, the science is a bit confusing (it's who you listen to) and the recipe ideas weren't appetising for me。 However, I give it a 4 star because I think anyone looking to get into healthy eating should do whatever they are comfortable with。 。。。more

Great read for anyone who want to get in the LCHF arena。 I have to say that sometimes the author does beat the dead horse when it comes to normal diets vs keto life style, but I get he is trying to make a point, other then that it's educational。 Great read for anyone who want to get in the LCHF arena。 I have to say that sometimes the author does beat the dead horse when it comes to normal diets vs keto life style, but I get he is trying to make a point, other then that it's educational。 。。。more

I have been staunchly, stubbornly hateful of the current Insta-guru Keto fad。 Because… carbs。 But um。 Taubes makes some exceptionally well-researched arguments in favor。 At least for certain insulin-resistant fat folks (like me)Scientific diagrams and research! I’ve read quite a few keto/LCHF books now and was pleased this didn’t feel like it trod the same ground over again。 Not too much mention of Ancel Keys for example! But I thought it would work well for beginners as a nice way to educate and convert if the science is new to you。 He also has some interesting thoughts on nuts and I’ll take the notion of experimentation as much as possible - try cutting something out if you’ve stalled then adding it back in。

The book sheds light on an interesting perspective, perhaps not new but for me, it was surely an eye-opener。 I have struggled with weight gain and at times I wouldn't understand why the body behaves in a certain way。 I am sure we all have thought, why is it that some ppl who can eat anything and yet stay lean where as other people put on fat and weight。 If you have ever wanted an answer to this question, perhaps this book is for you。 The book sheds light on an interesting perspective, perhaps not new but for me, it was surely an eye-opener。 I have struggled with weight gain and at times I wouldn't understand why the body behaves in a certain way。 I am sure we all have thought, why is it that some ppl who can eat anything and yet stay lean where as other people put on fat and weight。 If you have ever wanted an answer to this question, perhaps this book is for you。 。。。more

Another well thought out and throughly researched book by Taubes。 Taubes’s other books on this topic can sometimes be a little dense and repetitive。 Case for Keto makes it’s points succinctly。 It will never stop amazing me how either ignorant or inept the medical intelligentsia was on the issues of type 2 diabetes and obesity for years。

Good information, easy to followGood information clearly written。 I already knew a lot of this, having read a few other books on the dangers of carbs, but this gives a lot of reinforcement, which is helpful in a world where carbs are everywhere。

The Case for Keto is well-documented。 It shows how much time and energy went into researching the Ketogenic diet。 Gary Taubes presents the facts well。 This book is an excellent read for dietitian and layman alike。 I highly recommend it。I won this book in a goodreads giveaway。

This is an excellent book for anyone to read, regardless of whether you struggle with obesity and/or metabolic syndrome。 Whatever your scenario or circumstances in life regarding your health, I highly recommend that you read this book and consider what the author has to say about the ketogenic eating pattern。 It is clear, as in his other books, that he did his research and considers all opinions aside from his own。This book, like "Why We Get Fat," helped me develop more compassion for people who This is an excellent book for anyone to read, regardless of whether you struggle with obesity and/or metabolic syndrome。 Whatever your scenario or circumstances in life regarding your health, I highly recommend that you read this book and consider what the author has to say about the ketogenic eating pattern。 It is clear, as in his other books, that he did his research and considers all opinions aside from his own。This book, like "Why We Get Fat," helped me develop more compassion for people who struggle with obesity because it helped me see obesity as an onset condition that is largely uncorrelated with people's exercise habits and physics。 That was the most significant takeaway for me。 。。。more

Excellent book that makes an honest well-researched case for low carb eating。 Author eviscerates the conventional advice to limit fats in your diet。 He explains that it's the sugar and starch, not the fat, in food that is harming us。 Excellent book that makes an honest well-researched case for low carb eating。 Author eviscerates the conventional advice to limit fats in your diet。 He explains that it's the sugar and starch, not the fat, in food that is harming us。 。。。more

Gary Taubes is a very good author。 I've read several of his books and it's always a pleasure。 Nothing revolutionary in this book but it's just well organized, balanced, and well written argument。 Gary Taubes is a very good author。 I've read several of his books and it's always a pleasure。 Nothing revolutionary in this book but it's just well organized, balanced, and well written argument。 。。。more

Less convincing than previous bookThis is a shorter summary book of "why we get fat" and I found it less convincing。 It has fewer footnotes and only added some anecdotes。 I wanted more data。 Hopefully clinicians will study keto more and then I'll read another book by this author, who does have an engaging style。 Less convincing than previous bookThis is a shorter summary book of "why we get fat" and I found it less convincing。 It has fewer footnotes and only added some anecdotes。 I wanted more data。 Hopefully clinicians will study keto more and then I'll read another book by this author, who does have an engaging style。 。。。more

The author makes a case for the Keto diet, which is a low carb, high saturated fat diet。 He makes a strong case, and it seems to work well, particularly for those who struggle with weight or have diabetes。 He makes the point that people metabolize their food differently。 This diet particularly works for those who struggle with excessive weight gain。 It made me wonder about whether this diet should be followed if people do not have a propensity to gain weight easily。

Lighter on the science than Good Calories, Bad Calories。 But very practical and clear。
